What would the 4th of July be without fireworks? They’re beautiful and as much a part of the American celebration of independence as parades and barbecues. Unfortunately, for all their beauty, fireworks are also dangerous. Here are a few tips to keep your home and family safe when celebrating this July 4th.

  1. Store fireworks safely. Keep them in a cool, dry place that is out of the reach of children and any heat source including light bulbs.
  2. Keep fireworks outdoors. I know this seems like a no brainer, but even small fireworks can easily get out of hand inside your home. With over 15,500 fires started by fireworks in the US in 2013, and 1,400 of those being structural, it’s best to use an abundance of caution.
  3. Avoid lighting around flammable materials. The best place to set fireworks off is in a large open area away from trees, brush, vehicles, and homes. If it’s the type that launches in the air, make sure you’re far enough away from any buildings that they can’t land on top of them.
  4. Never point fireworks at people. This is another one that goes without saying, but in the month around July 4th, 230 people a day go to the hospital with fireworks related injuries.
  5. Be ready for an accident. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose ready if things get out of control. Also keep a first aid kit nearby just in case someone gets injured.

The safest way for you to enjoy fireworks is to let the professionals handle it, but if you choose to celebrate the 4th with your own display of patriotism, these tips are a good start to keep you and your loved ones safe.
