While they’re still not exactly mainstream, self-driving, autonomous vehicles are here and they’re becoming more popular. Eerie Insurance and Harris Poll conducted a survey to get people’s ideas on what having an autonomous car might mean.

  • 59{66506b27ca8f5234034d808fc0aabc14bc16ceb45d71027974b073b60f711cfe} said they thought distracted driving would become a thing of the past since the driver would be able to rely on the car.
  • When asked what the best thing about an autonomous vehicle will be, 51{66506b27ca8f5234034d808fc0aabc14bc16ceb45d71027974b073b60f711cfe} said they plan to snooze during the ride. A third said a big advantage would be not getting a DUI if you had a few drinks.
  • Other popular answers were texting, reading, playing games and meditating.
  • Some admitted they’d try to get a little freaky. Not too surprisingly, almost four times as many men said that than women.

Some of these ideas might happen, some might not. For all those who dream of sleep-driving, current autonomous vehicle manufacturers strongly warn against doing that, as the cars do need some manual guidance in some situations, despite a viral video of a sleeping Tesla owner making his way down a highway (see above video).

And as for drinking, don’t expect to be able to do that any time soon. State laws sometimes take a while to catch up to technology, and, as stated previously, at this point it’s suggested that drivers be ready and alert to take over the wheel, so drinking and driving is still a n0-no.

But who knows what the future holds? Companies are already trying to perfect self-driving taxis and freight trucks, so true, 100{66506b27ca8f5234034d808fc0aabc14bc16ceb45d71027974b073b60f711cfe} autonomous cars are very likely going to be here one day, and probably sooner than later.
