H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford founded Erie Insurance. They discovered they had a gift for sales and customer service while working together at the Pennsylvania Indemnity Exchange (PIE). Though they excelled in the same line of work, H.O. and O.G. came from very different backgrounds.
Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Henry Orth Hirt worked his way to a degree at Wittenberg College. After graduation, he became a teacher, but his career was cut short by tuberculosis. He survived the deadly disease but could no longer teach.
H.O. then worked a series of different jobs, making an impact wherever he went. Most notably, he helped revive a struggling grocery store into a profitable business. However, his health couldn’t keep up with the physical demands of such jobs, so H.O. finally turned to sales at the Pennsylvania Indemnity Exchange.
Oliver Grover Crawford started his adult life in the Navy. He finished his service after six years and became a railroad brakeman. He happened to cross paths with H.O., who recommended he apply for a sales position at PIE. O.G. got the job as a salesman and quickly excelled at his job. In only 30 days, he completed 243 applications!
H.O. and O.G. soon realized they would make excellent business partners on a venture of their own. They submitted their resignations in 1924 and began organizing the Erie Insurance Exchange. They won over 90 stockholders in only 3 months and 20 days with their handwritten business plan. Surely their natural charm and enthusiasm also helped promote their mission:
“To provide our Policyholders with as near perfect protection, as near perfect service, as is humanly possible, and to do so at the lowest possible cost.” -H.O. Hirt
They founded the company on premium customer service. They even encouraged their customers to call collect! H.O. also freely gave his direct line to any policyholder who had a claim issue. News of their superior service quickly spread, and in just a few short years, Erie Insurance was nationally-known and respected.
