Foremost Insurance History

Foremost Insurance Company was founded by Edward J. Fry, Richard E. Riebel, Edward L. Stoddard, and a handful of investors on June 12, 1952. They started with the desire to provide insurance for those living in mobile homes—a first of its kind!

Just nine years later, in 1961, Foremost introduced the first travel trailer insurance policy called “Travel Sure.” They met the needs of the growing American group of travel trailer enthusiasts. Travel Sure was their first step toward diversification.

In the 1960s, Foremost Insurance also commissioned an extensive study on mobile homes. The results led to many states implementing mandatory tie-down laws that helped protect mobile homes and their residents.

By 1970, the company covered any vehicle that a person could drive, including motorcycles, boats, mini-bikes, snowmobiles, and all-terrain vehicles.

In the 1980s, AARP endorsed Foremost Insurance for its specialized work for homeowners over the age of 50. Foremost is still meeting the needs of that demographic, including those living on a fixed income. AARP also later officially endorsed Foremost’s motorcycle insurance due to its excellent claim service. They offer guaranteed renewability, multi-year policies, and reduced rates.

In 2000, Foremost Insurance was acquired by Farmers Insurance Group of Companies, of which they are still a part of today.

Foremost Insurance has helped establish mobile home building codes with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Plus, they regularly conduct the industry’s most in-depth market research report on manufactured homes and their residents.

The company has grown significantly since its inception. They operate in all 50 states and Washington D.C. with more than 38,000 employees.
