Nationwide Insurance sprouted from a farmers bureau in Ohio in the 1920s. Though farmers had fewer accidents and claims, they were paying the same insurance rates as city drivers. The Ohio Farm Bureau seized the opportunity to provide better rates to farmers based on their lower liability.
In April of 1926, the Ohio Farm Bureau attained a business license for the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. They funded their venture with a $10,000 loan from the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. Ohio law at the time required 100 people to pledge to become policyholders before the company could do business. Farm Bureau Mutual smashed that requirement within a few days, opening for business with more than 1,000 policyholders.
As their name clearly expressed, Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company offered exclusively auto insurance and only to members of the Ohio Farm Bureau. Though, it wasn’t long before Farm Bureau Mutual expanded to West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont, and North Carolina. They also began offering fire and life insurance.
Farm Bureau Mutual spread to more regions, more states, and added more insurance services every year. In 1955, Farm Bureau Mutual decided to rename their company Nationwide Insurance. Hendersonville North Carolina was one of its earliest service areas, and locals still rely on the company today.
