Nationwide Insurance started as a small auto insurance company created for local farmers in Ohio. In the 1920s, farmers paid the same insurance rates as city drivers despite having different driving habits. Farmers had fewer accidents and insurance claims than city drivers. The Ohio Farm Bureau decided to create their own insurance company to offer the better rates that farmers deserved.
In April of 1926, the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company obtained an Ohio business license and drew a $10,000 loan from the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.
Ohio law at the time required any aspiring insurance company to get 100 people to pledge to become policyholders. Farm Bureau Mutual had no difficulty attaining the pledges. In fact, just four days after getting their license, they opened for business with over 1,000 policyholders.
As their long name suggested, the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company only offered automobile insurance, and only to members of the Ohio Farm Bureau. However, over the next decade, Farm Bureau Mutual expanded to West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont, and North Carolina. They started writing policies for small and big townsfolk, and added fire and life insurance to their offerings.
Farm Bureau Mutual continued to expand, planting regional offices in multiple locations and adding more insurance services. In 1955, Farm Bureau Mutual became Nationwide Insurance.
