In 1864, Hartford businessman and stone cutter, named James C. Batterson, started the first accident insurance company in the United States.

Prior to opening, Batterson met a local banker, James E. Bolter, in the post office. Bolter had heard that Batterson was trying to start his company along with some other townsmen. He asked Batterson how much he would charge him to cover his walk home, four blocks away.

His reply? “Two cents.”

Even today, that two-cent “premium” is a precious value held by Travelers standards. Batterson served as president of Travelers since its founding on April 1, 1864, until he passed away in 1901.
