History of Travelers Insurance
In 1864, a stone cutter and Hartford businessman, James C. Batterson, founded the first accident insurance company in the United States with the help of some other local townsmen.
Prior to opening, Batterson met a local banker, named James E. Bolter, in the post office. Bolter had heard about Batterson’s company proposal. He asked Batterson how much he would charge to insure his four-block walk to his home. Batterson replied, “Two cents.”
Today, that two-cent “premium” is upheld by Travelers Insurance standards. Batterson served as president of Travelers Insurance from its founding on April 1, 1864, until he passed away in 1901.
Since the start, Travelers Insurance has grown quite a bit. In 2019, it produced revenues of approximately $32 billion, with $2.6 billion in net income. It also generated a 10.5% return on equity, with $2.4 billion in returned shareholders capital. At present, it is the only property casualty company in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
