Hurricane season is upon us once again, and as seems to happen every year, forecasters are saying it could be a very active season. You probably know to stock up on food, water, flashlights, batteries, and first aid kits, but have you made sure your homeowner’s insurance policy is ready for a disaster? Here are some questions to check on regarding your home insurance.
What does your homeowner’s insurance policy cover?
Most homeowner’s policies cover hurricanes, along with wind, fire, lightning, and other disasters, but there are things that aren’t covered as well, like sewer back-ups and, probably most importantly, floods. Floods often cause the most damage and loss of life during hurricanes.
Does your homeowner’s insurance policy cover enough?
In the worst case scenario, your home could be completely destroyed in a hurricane. Does your policy cover enough to rebuild your house? What about replacing all of your furniture, your clothes, your electronics? Make sure you have a list of everything you own, and be sure your policy covers it.
What are you going to do while your home is being repaired?
Your homeowner’s insurance covers ALE, additional living expenses, in the event that you’re not able to stay in your home for a period of time. It even covers lost rental income in case you rent out part of your home. Make sure your ALE covers a proper amount of money and time.
