History of Nationwide Insurance

Nationwide Insurance sprouted in the 1920s from a farmers’ bureau in Ohio. At the time, farmers paid the same high insurance premiums as city drivers, despite having fewer accidents and claims. The Ohio Farm Bureau realized there was an opportunity to provide fair rates to farmers based on lower liability.

In April of 1926, the Ohio Farm Bureau got an Ohio business license for the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. They funded the business venture with a $10,000 loan from the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. Ohio law required 100 people to pledge to become policyholders before an insurance company could do business. Farm Bureau Mutual far exceeded that requirement in just a few days, opening their doors with more than 1,000 policyholders.

As their lengthy name stated, Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company only offered auto insurance and only to Ohio Farm Bureau members. But before long, Farm Bureau Mutual expanded to West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont, and North Carolina. They also added fire and life insurance to their portfolio.

Farm Bureau Mutual continues to spread to more states and added more insurance services every year. In 1955, the company decided to change its name from Farm Bureau Mutual to Nationwide Insurance. Clemmons NC was one of its earliest expansion points, and locals still rely heavily on the company today.

Nationwide Insurance introduced the “Nationwide is on your side” slogan in 1965 and set it to music in 1969. Most Americans can sing the catchy jingle at the mention of their name.
