History of Nationwide Insurance
Nationwide Insurance was founded by local farmers in Ohio in the 1920s. At the time, farmers paid the same high premiums as city drivers despite having less liability. Farmers got into fewer accidents and had fewer insurance claims, so they realized they should pay better rates.
The Ohio Farm Bureau seized the opportunity to offer better insurance premiums to its members. In April of 1926, they obtained an Ohio business license for the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and withdrew a $10,000 loan from the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.
According to Ohio law at the time, any aspiring insurance company had to get 100 people to pledge to become policyholders. Farm Bureau Mutual far surpassed that requirement. In fact, within days of getting their license, they opened their doors with more than 1,000 policyholders.
As their detailed name suggested, Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company offered exclusively automobile insurance, and only to Ohio Farm Bureau members. However, Farm Bureau Mutual quickly expanded over the next ten years to West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont, and North Carolina. They also expanded their insurance offerings, adding fire and life insurance policies.
Farm Bureau Mutual continued to grow, planting more regional offices and adding more insurance services across the country. In 1955, Farm Bureau Mutual became Nationwide Insurance.
