History of Travelers Insurance
In 1864, James C. Batterson, a stone cutter and Hartford businessman, began the very first accident insurance company in the United States.
Before it opened, Batterson met a local banker, named James E. Bolter, in the post office. Bolter had heard about the insurance company that Batterson was trying to start. He asked Batterson how much he would charge him to cover his walk home, a mere four blocks away. Batterson replied, “Two cents.”
Even today, that two-cent “premium” is a Travelers Insurance standard. Batterson served as president of Travelers Insurance from its beginning, on April 1, 1864, until he passed away in 1901.
Since the start, Travelers Insurance has grown incredibly. In 2019, it boasted revenues of almost $32 billion, with $2.6 billion in net income. In addition, it saw a 10.5% return on equity, with $2.4 billion in capital returned to its loyal shareholders.
