In 1864, a Hartford businessman and stone cutter, by the name of James C. Batterson, started the very first accident insurance company in the United States.

Before it opened, Batterson met a local banker, James E. Bolter, at the post office.

Bolter had previously heard about the company that Batterson was trying to start. He asked Batterson how much he would charge to cover his four-block walk home. Batterson’s reply? “Two cents.”
